I am on Block Island this week and (not coincidentally) have finally finished the book! I loved it. I have to say that my mother mostly commented on how funny it is and that was not my lasting impression. I mean, it IS funny but so sweet and sad.
I read the Little Giant of Aberdeen County this week as well. Have either of you read that?
I thoroughly enjoyed the book, though I'm sorry it took so long to finish. One of the discussion questions mentioned the connection between balthazar's obsession with collecting rain and his inability to cry about milo. did either of you notice that? I kept thinking it was something specifically connected to milos death, like catching cold from being out in the rain. I love that he left the bottles on the tube to send her the message that he was ready to let go. I think the septimus/ruby storyline was one of my favorites. I love that he dressed in drag to claim his prize. I love that he had the guts to leave the church, feeling that he could help people even more outside of it. Another discussion question was who was the most fulfilled character. I smiled and thought the tortoise who killed the raven who had eaten her tail. Who did you think? Being an only child, the story made me think about my parents and how protective they were. They had me later in life, like milos parents, and I was kind of their "business". I found memos my dad used to write to my teachers, and it cracked me up how business-like he was , but thats what he knew and how he loved me. What would they have been like if they had lost me suddenly and unexpectedly? Needless to say, I'm grateful to be here and to be able to share this bookclub with two dear friends, and I can't wait for our next pick. I'm on vacation, so let me know what it is and i'll get cracking. Love, K
